Most types of grass need higher nutrients when actively growing from mid-spring onwards. Basically, your lawn will receive more fertilizer than it can process. If applied too early in the season, your lawn may get more of the fertilizer than it needs leading to fertilizer scorch. Whereas a pre-emergent product must be applied before the weeds germinate in late fall through to early winter. A post-emergent weed and feed should be applied as the weeds are developing or mature from spring through to fall. But the optimum timing will depend on the type of product you purchase.
